Frequently Asked Questions

Who are "Akeela Campers"?
Akeela campers are boys and girls completing grades 3 through10 who are seeking a fun-filled experience that supports their social growth. They are bright and creative and sometimes shy away from or need help navigating social situations with their peers. Some have been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome or NVLD. Many of our campers prefer non-competitive games and tend to favor reading, video games (not allowed at camp!) or other more solitary activities.

What do you mean by "adult-only workshops"?
One of the most exciting parts of coming to Family Camp at Akeela is being in a place that is entirely dedicated to making a difference in the lives of very high-functioning children with social challenges. This is a group of children who often don't quite fit in either "typical" or "special needs" settings. Family camp is a rare opportunity to be surrounded by other families in similar situations. In addition to building that community, providing the space to connect and share with each other, Akeela is also committed to providing a more structured level of support to families. We will be offering optional guided discussions and workshops to help parents, children and siblings get the most out of their time at camp.

Who will be staffing the Family Camp?
The directors of Akeela Family Camp are Debbie and Eric Sasson, who share between the two of them over 40 years of camp experience, Masters degrees in education and school counseling, and a doctorate in clinical psychology. They are assisted at Family Camp by a select group of Camp Akeela staff members, professionals, camp counselors and activity leaders who truly represent the "best of the best!" Above all, the staff understand and adore children with special needs and are passionate about providing them with life-long skills, friendships and memories.

Will my children by supervised by the camp staff?
Supervision will be provided exclusively during organized camp activities (Periods 1 - 4 and certain Evening Activities). Otherwise, parents are asked to be responsible for their children. Night-time babysitting service may be requested, as available, for an additional fee.

What if I want to bring my furry friends with me to camp?
Sorry, all pets need to stay at home - but you can write them a letter and let them know about the great time you are having. We can provide local boarding options upon request.

What will my cabin look like?
All of Akeela's cabins have been fully renovated within the last 3 years. They are equipped with electricity, toilets, sinks, and showers. Our beds are made on-site and are both supportive and comfortable. You can either stay with your own family or choose to share a cabin with another family.

Do I need to bring my own sheets and towels?
If you are able to bring your own linens, that is preferred. However, if you need to use camp linens, we do have a limited supply available for a fee of $15 per person; just let us know in advance.

Are there opportunities for my family to take trips out of camp?
Yes, we will be offering organized, half-day trips for those that are interested. We will also provide a list of local attractions for those families who prefer to explore on their own.

Is there a place for me to check my email or make a phone call if I need to?
Yes, Akeela has a designated "business area" for those who need it, during specified hours. Satellite internet access is available, along with a printer, fax machine and telephones. Just a reminder, though: Family Camp is meant to be a vacation... we recommend leaving your Blackberry at home!
