Leadership
LITs take on leadership roles in the Akeela camp community, helping with younger campers and assisting with activities of their choosing. They also have the option to learn about some of the "behind-the-scenes" operations of camp, including the kitchen, maintenance and health center.

Preparing for Life After High School
  • Employment Skills. Creative tools and local professionals are used to help LITs explore potential career paths. The group discusses the process of getting a job, including writing resumes and cover letters. LITs role-play initial phone calls, interviews and first-day scenarios.
  • Managing Money. Through fun activities and a visit to a local bank, LITs learn about savings and checking accounts, budgeting, taxes, paying bills on time and using credit cards.
  • Peer Relationships. LITs visit one or two other camps to practice interacting with their peer group in new situations. They also have guided discussions about friendship, romantic relationships, dating and sexuality.
  • Shopping & Cooking. LITs learn about nutrition, exercise, health and eating a balanced diet. They plan a menu, develop a shopping list and purchase the groceries they need to prepare their own special dinner.
  • College Options. A college counselor comes to camp to lead exercises and discussions about options for higher education, SAT/ACT preparation and the college admissions process. LITs visit a range of local campuses, from the Ivy League to a community college. They also explore gap-year programs and other college alternatives.

Community Service
LITs work together on community service projects outside of camp. They apply their individual strengths and interests to help those around them, including local farms, hospitals, community centers and senior citizens' homes.

They also take responsibility for an in-camp community service project. The LITs generate an idea, develop a plan and implement an all-camp event. This is a great opportunity to practice teamwork, manage a budget, meet deadlines and exercise leadership roles with younger campers.

Trips and Outdoor Adventure
The culminating experience of the Beyond Akeela program is a 5-day adventure during which LITs put all their skills to the test. They spend the first half of the trip living in a condominium resort, in single-sex units with adult supervision. The second half of this unforgettable trip is spent hiking and camping together.

LITs prepare for this "Big Trip" throughout the first part of the camp session. Fun in-camp activities and weekly hiking, biking and camping trips provide exhilarating outdoor adventure experiences. High and low ropes course elements are used to build trust and unity amongst the group. Friendships become even stronger as the group practices their new leadership and life skills in fresh and exciting settings. Life-long memories are sure to be made!
